| Of all the ways to get around town, none may
be more convenient than public transportation. Options abound in
Pennsylvania from subways to ferries, taxis to buses, trolleys
to trains. Municipalities work hard to ensure that their
transportation methods are safe and reliable.
Public transportation can be a very valuable tool to save money
and get to a destination more efficiently. Just remember to use
common sense and take a few simple precautions when traveling.
Here are a few things to bear in mind when using public
transportation.
- Pay attention to all warning signs when entering the vehicle.
- Be aware that many vehicles do not allow eating, drinking,
smoking, weapons or audio devices without headphones.
- Follow all instructions given by the operator.
- Stay seated while in motion. If you must stand, hold on to the
railings or seat backs.
- Stay clear of any doorways and stairwells, and never put any
body part outside of the windows.
- When you enter or leave a vehicle, watch for slippery or
uneven pavement and other hazards that could cause you to fall.
- Have your exact fare ready.
- Stand slightly to one side to let people exiting the vehicle
get off before you try to board. It is not only a matter of
courtesy, but also one of personal safety.
- Be careful on the train and subway platforms when getting
entering and exiting the cars. Do not attempt to get on or off a
train while the doors are closing.
- Do not carry too many packages. Always leave one hand free to
grasp railings.
- Use seatbelts where available, particularly in taxis.
- Wait in a populated, well-lit area.
- Keep your belongings securely sealed and hold them close to
your body. Do not leave them on an empty seat.
- Avoid displaying expensive looking watches, rings, necklaces
or other jewelry.
- Most public bus stops are at intersections. You should not
cross the street in front of the bus, but wait for it to pull
away so you have a clear view of the street. Cross at the
crosswalk or street corner and wait for the light to turn green
or for the “walk” crossing signal.
- Use only recognized ground transportation services available
at authorized bus, limousine, and taxi pick-up points. Be wary
of solicitors offering alleged low cost service. It may turn out
to be unreliable, expensive and uninsured.
